The Heritage of the Harrington Jacket: Manchester Rainwear to Cinematic Icon
"Tracing the legendary G9 silhouette from the wet golf courses of 1930s Lancashire to James Dean, Steve McQueen, and modern atelier craftsmanship."
By Gentlemen's Consigliere Atelier
Clean, abbreviated, and effortlessly rebellious, the Harrington Jacket is one of the few garments in history that bridges Ivy League preppiness, 1950s cinematic rebellion, and refined continental tailoring. Yet behind its Hollywood pedigree lies a humble origin story born in the drizzly climate of northern England.
1. Born in Manchester: The Baracuta G9 (1937)
In 1937, brothers John and Isaac Miller founded the Baracuta rainwear company in Manchester, England. Avid golfers seeking a lightweight, windproof, and water-repellent jacket that wouldn’t restrict their swing created the G9 jacket ("G" standing for Golf). To ensure maximum ventilation and freedom of movement, they engineered raglan sleeves, an elasticated waistband, and the iconic scalloped "umbrella" storm flap across the back yoke to let raindrops roll off without entering the pockets.
In 1938, the Miller brothers were granted permission by Lord Lovat, the 24th Chief of the Clan Fraser, to line the interior of the jacket with the distinctive red-and-green Fraser Tartan—a hidden flash of heritage that became the silhouette’s definitive hallmark.
2. Hollywood Stardom & The Name "Harrington"
When the jacket crossed the Atlantic to American university campuses in the 1950s, it exploded into popular consciousness. Elvis Presley wore it in King Creole (1958), and James Dean donned an iconic red variant in Rebel Without a Cause (1955). The King of Cool himself, Steve McQueen, frequently wore the silhouette both on set and off-duty.
Curiously, the name "Harrington" was coined in the 1960s after character Rodney Harrington (played by Ryan O’Neal in the hit TV series Peyton Place), who wore the G9 so religiously that London tailors John Simons began advertising it in shop windows as "The Rodney Harrington Jacket."
3. Signature Tailoring Codes
Our Gentlemen’s Consigliere Harrington jacket honors every millimeter of this pedigree while refining the fit for a razor-sharp modern profile:
- The Stand-Up Double-Button Collar: Known as the "dog-ear" collar, which buttons snug against brisk coastal winds.
- Flap Angled Pockets: Buttoned slanted welt pockets designed to secure a wallet or phone seamlessly.
- Elasticated Ribbing: Form-fitting ribbed cuffs and hem that preserve warmth while highlighting natural shoulder-to-waist taper.
- High-Density Water-Repellent Gabardine: Tailored in midnight navy and deep obsidian cotton twill with authentic cotton tartan lining.
4. The Atelier Perspective
While the Harrington originated as sportswear, pairing it with fine charcoal flannels, cream knitwear, and polished leather loafers recontextualizes the piece into the ultimate weekend uniform for the discerning gentleman.
